Body types introduction : Type 1 - Yangxu

The word 'Yang' is from the traditional word 'Yin-Yang' ,representing the two opposite forces of nature in TCM. The word 'Xu' means deficit or insufficient. Together a 'Yangxu' body type represent individuals who are insufficient in the 'Yang'.
Yang, like many ancient concepts, is a rather abstract concept. Generally in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ,it represents the force of life. It is also described as uprising, providing warmth and energy to all life forms.

The deficit in Yang will therefor, brings up different symptoms to a person.
A person who belong to a classic Type 1 (Yangxu) body type will most likely present most or all of the following symptoms:

1. Sensitivity to cold
Type 1 individuals response to low temperature more acutely than other body types. If you always have to put on one or even a few more clothes just to keep warm - compare to people around you, it is likely that you belong to Type 1.

2. Low libido
It is common for Type 1 individuals to have a low libido compare to others. This symptoms is especially clear during cold season.

3.A fat and 'baby-like' tongue
Tongue inspecting is one of the most important diagnostic skills in TCM. Type 1 individuals usually have a 'fat' and 'baby liked' tongue.

4.Dark eye circles and pale lips
Type 1 individuals usually have very persistent dark eye circles and pale lips. As with most symptoms for this body type, this symptom usually becomes more apparent in cold season.

5.Chronic diarrhea
According to TCM,there are many causes for chronic diarrhea. Type 1 individuals often suffer from this symptom with the following characteristics: 1.Diarrhea happens mainly in the morning. 2.Sensitivity to cold food and drinks - Type 1 individuals develops diarrhea easily after ingesting cold drinks or food. Sometimes a glass of cold drink is enough to set off a diarrhea. 3. Indigestion - when severe, excretion will contain partly or entirely of undigested food with still clear original shapes and colors.

6.Frequent urination
Frequent urination is a common characteristic in Type 1 individuals. A Type 1 person feels the urge to urinate more often than others no matter day or night. In severe cases, the person may have to wake up in the middle of the night to urinate.

7.Depression
Mild to server depression is present in many type 1 individual. As in most symptoms of Type 1, depression in these individuals worsen in cold season and is least serve in hot season.

8.Thinning hair
Thinning hair is also a common trait in type 1 individuals. Although, according to TCM, there are many reasons as to why thinning hair will develops, so we include this symptom as a reference only.

If you have most or all of these symptoms on a regular basis, it is fairly certain that you belong to Type 1 body type.

*Again,as mentioned before, adults usually consist of more than one body type. Therefore, it is crucial to find out which is your 'dominant' body type - meaning the symptoms that fits you most in most of the time. You can start attending to your health according to that body type then.
